Platform: Mac OS X

Review by Frederick Barton (Cybersecurity Editor)

Unlike the Windows operating system, Mac OS X comes with an excellent web browser, but if you are looking for something more simple and comfortable, you should turn to Opera. It is counted among the most popular browsers on the market, right next to Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome or Safari. Just like the aforementioned browsers, Opera is available for multiple operating systems, including Mac OS X and it is offered completely free of charge.

Simplicity is Opera's key feature. Instead of being overloaded with toolbars and menus, the user interface has a clean and efficient layout. When launched, the browser will display a speed dial by default, but you can also switch to a bookmark manager and discover the latest stories, on the same page. The best part about the speed dial is the fact that you can add your own websites manually, by simply typing their addresses. Alternatively, you can add a website to the speed dial just by clicking a button, on the address bar, while visiting that site. Furthermore, you can add as many shortcuts as you want and the tiles will remain unmodified at all times, regardless of your browsing habits.

Opera's bookmark manager is known as a Stash. Adding new pages to the Stash can be done just like bookmarking them in other web browsers. Stashed pages are listed as ribbons on the "new tab" page, where you can expand them, to preview the saved pages. It is also possible to add stashed pages to the quick dial with only one click.

Despite its simple appearance, Opera is quite versatile, due to the many features under its hood. A Turbo mode can be engaged at any time, with a single click, to increase the browsing speed. Furthermore, the browser comes with a dedicated function for clearing private data, along with any traces of your browsing habits. Another feature which makes the browser shine is the possibility of synchronizing all bookmarks and speed dial between multiple devices over the Internet. This means that you can make your bookmarks available anywhere in the world, on a PC, laptop, mobile phone or tablet.

Pros

Opera provides a wide range of useful features. It allows you to set up your own speed dial, preview bookmarked pages and synchronize them between different platforms. The browser's clean and intuitive design enables any users, including beginners, to perform any action with minimum effort.

Cons

There are no obvious issues to address. Thanks to Opera's smart and efficient design, surfing the web can be a pleasant and comfortable experience.
